Equipment

  • Medium-sized saucepan
  • Whisk
  • Measuring spoons and cups
  • Glass jar or container for storage

Ingredients

  • Ketchup 1 ⅓ cups
  • Water cup
  • Brown sugar cup
  • Apple cider vinegar 2 ½ tablespoons
  • Worcestershire sauce 1 ½ tablespoons
  • Garlic powder 1 ¼ teaspoons
  • Onion powder 1 ¼ teaspoons
  • Smoked paprika ¾ teaspoon
  • Ground black pepper ¾ teaspoon
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  • Gather all your ingredients and the equipment needed for the Chicago Mild Sauce recipe.
  • First, grab your medium-sized saucepan and pour in the ketchup, water, brown sugar, apple cider vinegar, and Worcestershire sauce.
  • Next, place the saucepan over a medium heat setting. Stir your mixture from time to time until it begins to gently bubble.
  • Now, it's time to introduce the rest of the spices: garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, ground black pepper, and a dash of salt. Mix these ingredients thoroughly until they're fully incorporated.
  • Reduce the heat to low and let your Chicago Mild Sauce leisurely simmer for approximately 20-25 minutes. You'll notice the sauce begins to thicken slightly.
  • Finally, when the sauce has achieved your desired consistency, take it off the heat. Allow it to cool down to room temperature before decanting it into a glass jar or a similar storage container.

Notes

  • For an added kick, consider adding a few dashes of hot sauce or some crushed red pepper flakes to your Chicago Mild Sauce recipe.
  • If you prefer a sweeter profile, additional brown sugar can be added to taste.
  • Overheating the sauce which can cause it to burn, and not stirring the sauce enough, results in uneven flavors or potential lumps.
  • The sauce is best when allowed to rest for at least a few hours before use, allowing the flavors to meld together.
